St Martins has been shaped by the many hands, hearts and minds that have made it what it is today, on the same site for 40 years.
40:40 invites artists, young people and community members alike to ponder the multitude of small moments that have shaped who we are, shifted boundaries, shaken us up. St Martins is documenting the stories, and each week for 40 weeks of the four terms, we will be featuring a portrait of an alumni artist on our social media pages. In December, we will be presenting a one-day performance event, weaving together the 40 stories and moments from artists of the past and artists of the future.
Term 2 Studio Production, 1984
Our birthday brings together artists young and old, current and past. In Term 4, St Martins alumni are invited to provide stimulus material from which a class of young people, led by their Workshop Artist, will create a performative interaction. The result will include one-on-one storytelling, a walking tour, interactive nail salon, and video installation, with members from all over the St Martins community, 5-8s to Teens, Congress and Outreach, storming St Martins' headquarters for a culmination of everything this community has to be celebrate.
Performances will take over St Martins, activating the nooks and crannies of offices, stage spaces, carpark, dressing rooms and even the street itself. The audience, armed with nothing but a map, are free to explore, discover, drink, eat and commemorate.
40:40 is an invitation to all those who are and have been through the doors of St Martins to reconnect, re-enter and re-discover the site.
Some of our St Martins alumni include: Catherine McClements Barry Kosky Noah Taylor Julia Zemiro Jane Turner Matt Day Ben Mendelsohn Gina Riley and Frank Woodley.
