Thomas used to attend workshops at St Martins as a teenager in the 1990s before joining the organisation as their General Manager in 2021. During the time in-between, he worked in film programming at the Melbourne International Film Festival for eight years, which included programming MIFF Schools (formally Next Gen). Prior to that, he held marketing and communications positions at various other organisations in the arts, publishing and community sectors.
As well as working at St Martins, Thomas continues to program films for festivals, and he is the current Artistic Director of the Children’s International Film Festival. He is also an External Assessor for the New Zealand Film Commission and a freelance writer, specialising in film criticism and film education. He is the author of the secondary school textbook Film Analysis Handbook, published by Insight Publications, and is a three-time winner of the Ivan Hutchinson Award for Writing on Australian Film in the Australian Film Critics Association Writing Awards.
Thomas is also a radio broadcaster who has previously had regular appearances on ABC Radio Melbourne, ABC Radio National, Joy 94.9FM and Triple R 102.7FM, where he can still be occasionally heard on the Primal Screen program.
