ST MARTINS PEOPLE

Matilda

Work experience

Over the last few months, we have had a number of brilliant young people with us for work experience at our South Yarra headquarters.

Here we enjoyed getting to know Matilda who joined us all the way from Philip Island!

Matilda Work Experience Profile

What is your earliest memory of theatre?

I think my earliest memory was when in year four I got to do a local show called Magic Monkey and it was the first time I’d ever done anything theatre related and I just got to be with all these people who like doing the same thing as me.

It wasn’t so much about the performance at the end, but what we did along the way –  the games we played, getting to know each other, being confident, getting to yell silly things and just do weird things to get ourselves outside of our comfort zone. And I just thought that was awesome and ever since then, I’ve never wanted to stop!

When you are performing now, how do you feel?

Amazing. I think it’s the best feeling in the world. There’s nothing better than performing to me, I just feel free!

And how do you feel when you’re an audience member, experiencing a performance?

I also love it! I go to every show that I can possibly see, especially ones that my friends are in. I love being able to support them, knowing the hard work that they’ve put in. I love going to watch things as much as I love being in them.

What is inspiring you at the moment?

Stuff like what you are doing here – people who are putting themselves out there and doing things ! I think it’s really amazing.

What are your plans for the future?

I really hope to be a drama teacher. I would love to be able to do what I love and share my love for it with other people, especially kids. I love kids. I think they’re awesome.

What are three words you would use to describe St Martins?

Definitely inclusive, it’s really fascinating what you guys do here and inspiring.

We acknowledge the barriers to the arts that exist for many young people because of disability, cultural difference or social disadvantage and we offer scholarships and programs to overcome these barriers.
