ST MARTINS PEOPLE

Ellis

Work experience

Over the last few months, we have had a number of brilliant young people with us for work experience at our South Yarra headquarters. In the coming newsletters we will be introducing them to you!

Ellis has been attending workshops at St Martins for 8 years! It was awesome for him to join us for work experience to learn a bit more about what happens behind the scenes!

Ellis Hollier Then&Now

Since starting St Martins’ drama workshop 8 years ago, what is your favourite thing about them?

My favourite thing is the social aspect of it. How open it is, how nice it is. ‘Cause people from all over Melbourne hear about St Martins – about its stories and its image- and come to South Yarra or Northcote and just perform, have fun, and meet new friends. You know, you grow up with these people, and then you will see them later on in life – however, you wanna take your career, but it’s always just such a pleasure to come here on Saturdays. And even now, in work experience, it’s just such a pleasure to be here.

If you could describe St Martins in three words, what would they be?

Inspiration, curiosity and contemporary.

How do you feel when you are performing?

To me, when I perform, it’s a very complicated feeling, you know. Because you’ve been preparing so for so long to express yourself in the performance, you sort of go into it thinking, you know how it’s going to go, but it’s always different, it always feels new.  I feel like the emotions and what you get in the moment are very different to how you could ever expect. It’s different every time. And it does feel amazing, especially that rush of adrenaline you get once you go off stage. You feel amazing. You just performed in front of an audience – it’s live, it’s authentic, it’s fun.

What is inspiring you at the moment?
Right now I feel like a big one was The Word, I watched that yesterday. Seeing all these actors that I knew perform in a really, really vibrant and contemporary way. It was very sweet. It was very spiritual. While I was watching it, everything in my life just slowed down, and I kind of just got to see everything super slowly. And I thought about all the little things. I guess The Word gives you another really great view on life. And it opens your eyes a bit to question more things, be more curious.

What are your plans for the future?

In the future, I’d love to go as far as I can and just perform, particularly in theatre. I love just performing in front of a live audience. I love going on stage and all that. I’d love to go to the VCA and study acting or theatre and meet lots of people. Just live a life in the arts, that’s really what I want to do.

We acknowledge the barriers to the arts that exist for many young people because of disability, cultural difference or social disadvantage and we offer scholarships and programs to overcome these barriers.
