Living in Naarm/Melbourne, Sophia (she/they) is an emerging artist who spends her time theatre making, performing, facilitating and playing mostly on Wurundjeri and Bunurong Country. Moving from Worimi country in regional NSW to study theatre at the VCA, they are conscious of the many barriers that exist to experiencing art and are passionate about the importance of arts experiences to build community and improve lives.
Sophia’s practice currently centres around immersive, interactive work that is collaborative, playful and involves lots of movement and tactility (and often food). They are excited by the possibilities of theatre to transform unexpected and public spaces, bring people together, and offer broader audiences moments of magic.
A major part of Sophia’s practice is her work with young people, centering play, risk and the autonomy of the child. In addition to working with St Martins, Sophia is an artist with Polyglot Theatre, with whom she has toured internationally. She is also a playworker at the social organisation and adventure playground, the Venny. Sophia is currently developing a new work for children and young people about all the tiny, wriggly and wondrous things beneath our feet with collaborator Lauren Swain, supported by Monash University’s Progress Link Commission.
Working with young people reminds her always to be curious and continually responsive.
