Alonso Pineda (pin-eh-dah) (he/him) is a dynamic director, producer, creator and arts manager originally from Mexico City, recognised as the first Latino graduate of the Master of Directing for Performance program at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. With a career spanning theatre, live events, film, and performance art, Alonso is known for staging brave and contemporary performances that invite diverse audiences to reflect on humanity through vertiginous emotional journeys. His work is a mirror where artists and spectators are invited to recognise themselves and explore their curiosities.
Alonso has collaborated with major Australian organisations like the Melbourne Theatre Company, Michael Cassel, and Circus Oz. His portfolio includes celebrated works presented at fortyfivedownstairs, Chapel of Chapel and Gasworks in Naarm (Melbourne), as well as award-winning projects at Melbourne Fringe and as an artistic consultant at diverse educational organisations. He has been awarded with artistic excellence and creative development grants from the City of Melbourne and the University of Melbourne. His experience extends to creative production roles for acclaimed plays in Mexico, including Constellations, Heisenberg and Love/Sick, which enjoyed extensive runs, as well as large-scale music festivals.
Alonso believes that no matter the place where someone was born, their language, their skin colour, gender and abilities, we all share a basic commonality – we are human, we are dreamers, we need storytelling.
