EMBOLDEN
Who is St Martins?
If this is the first time you’ve heard of us, hello! At St Martins, we work with young people to make bold and disruptive public performances that have won numerous industry awards. Our drama workshops have been inspiring creativity and curiosity for generations.
For the past decade, our art making has been in collaborations between professional artists and young people under the age of 18. We extended that in 2025, launching EMBOLDEN, our program for young artists aged between 18 and 25.
2025-2027
What is EMBOLDEN?
EMBOLDEN is St Martins’s professional development program in response to both a need in the industry as well as from our young people. There are many emerging artists 18-25 who want to pursue a career in theatre but would like a guiding hand. The first year of EMBOLDEN was held in 2025 concluding with an exciting original performance outcome titled The weather app, on my phone, at a party at Melbourne Fringe. And now EMBOLDEN is back for its second year!
We are calling out for expressions of interest and will be selecting an ensemble of participants who will meet regularly throughout 2026 to devise, create, and perform an original theatre production together.
You will work with the experienced theatre maker/director İbrahim Halaçoğlu, along with other industry mentors, to build your creative skills. We will support and present this show in partnership with Melbourne Fringe at the Irene Mitchell Studio in September.
Who is invited to join us?
Are you between 18 and 25? (If you are a couple of years over this range but fulfil the other criteria, please still send us an EOI!)
Do you often feel like you’re not represented in the art that you see?
Are you passionate about contemporary devised/experimental theatre?
Do you have something to say?
Do you work well within a collective, and enjoy creating in an ensemble environment?
Would you like to build industry connections but don’t know where to start?
What to expect?
Once selected, you will meet with İbrahim (Ibo) and your cohort weekly over a 5-month period (there will be breaks, please see the detailed timeline below). These sessions will involve a mix of readings and discussions of different dramaturgical approaches to theatre making, devising, mentoring sessions, feedback sessions, and rehearsal time. The program is designed to activate the theatre makers in you by enabling you to observe and contribute to the entire process of generating and performing a theatre piece.
This year’s EMBOLDEN performance outcome will be realised via a process initiated by a director’s pitch. Ibo will share a concept with the EMBOLDEN participants through ideas, provocations, inspirations and specific theatre making processes. The program is designed to simultaneously build an ensemble and generate a show where everyone involved are co-devisors, evolving and enriching ideas to solidify a performance piece in a way that is beneficial both to the work and to their own careers.
Over the course of 5 months, we will learn about traditional and contemporary dramaturgies, see and respond to theatre pieces and films, deepen our understanding of theatre making, be an ensemble, devise, refine, rehearse, and then go through the steps of staging, including all the tech elements and what goes into producing a theatre piece.
There is no cost or payment associated with EMBOLDEN.
EMBOLDEN is a free training program that provides the participants with the opportunity to be a part of a devising process that concludes with a fully supported and produced theatre piece. During the program, the participants will be able to observe, work alongside and assist industry professionals.
Your participation is dependent on your ability to commit to this approach and timeline.

EMBOLDEN Lead Artist

İbrahim Halaçoğlu
A theatre-maker from Istanbul, İbrahim has been professionally involved in theatre since 2010, predominantly as a performer, as well as a director, dramaturg, and playwright. Most of his solo theatre-making practice centres around meddah, an ancient form of Turkish/Ottoman storytelling. He is passionate about revising traditional storytelling techniques to understand what it means to be a 21st-century storyteller. He currently focuses on queering and contemporising the meddah by combining autoethnography with postmodern narratives and metafiction. He truly believes that fiction can be used in art to make more sense of, or even authenticate, reality. He finished his master’s degree in directing at the VCA in 2021. He was offered the Graduate Director position at Red Stitch Actors' Theatre in 2022. He is currently the Artistic Associate at St Martins Youth Arts Centre. Some of his works in Melbourne include The Hyena (Western Edge), Peacemongers (The People), The Amateurs (Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre), Monument (Red Stitch Actors’ Theatre), Life Changing Show (The People), The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven (Bullet Heart Club) and Very Nice Pot Plants (Karla and Zachary). Ibrahim commences his PHD at the University of Melbourne this year and is the recipient of the prestigious Melbourne Research scholarship.
